| The form E111 (European Union Reciprocal Health Agreement) may pay for most of the costs of emergency medical treatment (usually about 75-80%) but that could still leave you considerably out of pocket. Better be safe.

| Most policies allow you to travel abroad on business. However, if you require cover for business equipment you should select a business travel policy.

| Yes. This is called cancellation cover - and, providing the cancellation was beyond your control - such as compulsory jury service, then the insurance would reimburse you. The same cover applies if you were unable to go on holiday because of illness of a member of the party travelling with you or the serious illness or death of a close family member. However, if an urgent business appointment came up that would not qualify for reimbursement.

| If you are likely to go abroad more than once it is usually better to buy an annual travel policy. This time it may be Spain or Europe; next time it could be Florida or somewhere even further away. If you just buy the European cover it will mean a new contract were you to go to the USA or other destination outside Europe.

| It may sound excessive but a vast amount of experience tells us that it is better to have more cover than insufficient. At the end of the day, no one can tell what treatment would be required and where it would be available. Repatriation is covered under this section of your policy and can be very expensive if it has to be by private plane. In the USA, in particular medical treatment is very, very expensive and similarly in other destinations around the globe. If you are going to, say, Portugal this holiday then it could easily be America next time.

| Always have your travel insurance policy to hand when booking a holiday or travel. They're only doing their job and trying to sell their favourite policy and to make sure you have adequate insurance cover. Showing them our policy, which offers much wider cover than most on offer, will solve the problem. Many travel agencies insist on your signing a declaration and giving your policy number - hence have it to hand - it'll save you some time.

| Yes. Motoring, camping and self-catering holidays are included. If you were to miss a ferry or it was cancelled because of strike or bad weather you would be able to claim under your policy. Equally if your luggage were stolen or damaged there should be a valid claim and the other sections of your policy also apply. Camping equipment can be expensive so make sure you have enough insurance cover.

| These frequently asked questions are to assist you. You should read the policy carefully to make sure it suits your requirements. The policy wording is available on the site under the policy wording section of the site. As with all insurance policies there are conditions: for example, there are excesses under most sections of your policy to reduce the incidence of small claims and you are signing, electronically, that you abide by the conditions. It is a serious offence to misrepresent material facts under an insurance contract (e.g. you confirm, in signing, that there are no pre-existing medical reasons increasing the risk of treatment being required whilst away from home).

|
| It is sensible to give the insurance company all the information to enable them to make a clear judgement. Depending on the severity of your condition they may ask for a medical report from your GP.

| Report the loss to a recognised authority (i.e. holiday rep, hotel management) who will be able to locate the police. You should notify your credit card supplier and bank immediately so that they can cancel the cards involved. Then call the claims number and your insurer will arrange for emergency cash to be available. It is sensible to keep a list of the credit card numbers and phone numbers in the UK in a separate place which may be a friend or relative in the UK that you could call to relay the information to your bank.

| Many holiday makers have a go at an unusual activity such as you mention. Our advice is to take care and look for a professional organisation that operates these exciting facilities. If you were to consider scuba diving it is sensible to seek a professionally qualified and certificated dive school. Your policy extends to cover you in the event of a mishap, providing the sole purpose of your trip was not to take on these hazardous pursuits - so, a diving holiday would not be automatically insured and you would need to approach the insurance company for clearance.
