How does broadband work?

Let's start at the beginning and take a look at the word band. In telecommunication, a band - sometimes called a frequency band - is a specific range of frequencies in the radio frequency (RF) spectrum, which is divided among ranges from very low frequencies (vlf) to extremely high frequencies (ehf). Each band has a defined upper and lower frequency limit.

Broadband dissects the telephone line so that both phone calls and digital information (with a modem) can be transmitted on the same line. You can do this because most suppliers will give you a broadband modem and/or filters. This split is also done at the telephone exchange for ADSL broadband or at the cable network for cable broadband.

There are more forms for receiving broadband, like satellite, mobile, radio, digital TV and fibre technologies. Really, these last ones are pretty expensive and not that easy to get. We will only show you ADSL and SDSL broadband packages.

Switching your Broadband Provider or Internet Service Provider (ISP) can potentially save you a small fortune each year. The UK broadband market is HUGE! Cost aside, you will be able to find a broadband package that will better suit your surfing needs. What Do I need To Switch?

Really, switching you ISP couldn't be simpler. All you need is:

• An active BT line.
• A modem which is compatible with an ADSL connection. You cannot use your cable modem (some providers will throw this in as part of the deal.)
• There may be additional equipment required, e.g. a microfilter, USB connection or ethernet connection, router, etc. (We will let you know what's needed and what's offered).

The toughest part of switching is finding the right broadband package for you. Once you have found your package, notify your current provider that you are switching (Terms of Cancellation will differ from provider to provider), they will give you a MAC number. How Does Your Broadband Comparison Service Work?

We have a very fancy functionality called an "Availability Checker". This Checker takes your postcode and searches for its proximity to the nearest telephone exchange. Once that result is in, we can tell you your maximum available speed and which providers you can sign up with that can provide your home with that speed.

How Much Is Switching Going To Cost Me?

Switching itself has not additional cost to you. However, depending on which Broadband Provider you choose, there may be connection / installation fees and extra costs for hardware.

What Happens After I Submit An Application?

Once you submit your application, the provider will notify that it has been received. The status of your application will rest with your new provider.

How does your service work?

This service compares the cost of having broadband in your home. Results are ranked in the order of what is most important to you. Depending on what you want from broadband, you can sort the results by monthly cost, usage limits, first year cost, additional features etc...

Some of the packages shown are wholesalers. This means that they provide you broadband using your existing BT phone line. Others are what are called Local Loop Unbundlers (LLUs). This suppliers will take over your phone line from BT. Be sure to read the information we provide carefully to ensure you are get the package that is right for you.

Once you find the package you want, we will forward you to the supplier's website to complete your application.

Are you my broadband supplier?

No, we are an intermediary that helps you see many broadband packages in one place. Once you complete your application on the supplier's website, they will be handling you account from then on. We will answer general broadband queries as well as questions about the website.

How long will it take to connect my new broadband?

This will differ for every supplier. To avoid loss of broadband while getting your new provider, please make sure you verify how long it will take with your new supplier.
